Habit Plants biennial or rarely short-lived perennial, glabrous except petioles; caudices naked.
Stems

straight, 1–8(9.3) dm.

Basal leaves

oblanceolate, spatulate, oblong, or lanceolate, 2–10(13.5) × 1–2.3(4) cm;

margins lyrate, dentate, or entire;

petioles 0.5–2 cm, ciliate.

Cauline leaves

lanceolate, linear, or oblong; (0.8)1–9.7(14.5) × 0.2–1(3) cm, bases amplexicaul to sagittate, sessile.

Inflorescences

lax, fruiting pedicels straight, ascending to divaricate; (2.5)3.5–8(14.5) mm.

Flowers

buds ovate to lanceolate;

sepals linear or lanceolate; erect; (3.5)5–8.5(11.5) mm;

petals linear, oblanceolate to spatulate; (6)9–16.5(22) × (0.5)0.8–2.7(3) mm, lavender to purple;

claws (2.5)4–7(11) mm; narrowest at base;

petal margins partially crisped;

median filaments free or united;

anthers included, linear; (1.5)2–4(5.5) mm, not circinately coiled, nectar glands confluent, subtending bases of all stamens;

ovules 22–40 per ovary;

stigmas entire;

Fruits

terete; straight and forming a straight line with pedicel, slightly torulose; (1.5)2–6.2(8.2) cm × 1–1.3(2) mm.
