Leaves | 5–12(15) × 2–5 cm, clasping; margins without hairs. |
Flowers | bell-shaped; tepals narrowly oblong-lanceolate, 9–15 mm, white to greenish yellow; inner tepals clasping stamens; tips spreading to somewhat recurved; pedicels twisted; stamens unequal; inner series 2–3 mm; outer series approximately 1 mm; anthers 3–4 mm; style 4–5 mm; stigma unlobed or minutely 3-lobed. |
Fruits | ellipsoid, 5–9 mm; whitish green when young, maturing to orange or red. |
Seeds | approximately 3 mm long. |

Discussion | Moist forests, shady stream banks. Flowering May–Jul. 0–2600m. BW, Casc, CR, ECas, Est, Sisk, WV. CA, ID, WA; northwestern and northeastern North America, Rocky Mountains; Eurasia. Native. Hybrids between S. amplexifolius and S. lanceolatus have been encountered where their ranges overlap in eastern North America. Thus far, hybrids have not been documented in western North America. |
