Open woodlands, meadows, creeksides, lake shores, swamps, cliffs, rock outcrops, talus. Flowering Jul–Sep. 0–3000 m. BR, BW, Casc, ECas. CA, ID, NV, WA; throughout northern and western North America. Native.
