Discussion

Roadsides, meadows, slopes, open woods. Flowering May–Jul. 0–1200 m. BW, Casc, CR, ECas, Lava, Sisk, WV. CA, ID, NV, WA; throughout North America; Europe, South America. Native.

Rocky slopes, outcrops, sage flats, lava craters. Flowering May–Jul. 900–2100 m. BR, ECas, Owy, Sisk. CA, ID, NV; CO. Native.

We follow Holmgren and Holmgren (2012) in recognizing S. nuda as including S. scaposa var. lobata; see their discussion of the typification of these taxa for additional information. Although considered by Morton (2005) to have two-lobed petals, the original description clearly states “limbs of the petals 4-lobed” (Watson 1871).
