Culms

Leaves

blades filiform, trigonous-channeled; (2)3–10 cm × 1–2 mm;

distal 1–2 leaf sheaths bladeless.

blades trigonous-channeled in cross section; to 30 cm × 1–2 mm;

distal leaf blade 1–4 cm × 1–1.5 mm; shorter than its sheath.

Inflorescences

involucral bracts absent.

blade-bearing involucral bracts solitary, similar to distal leaf;

blade usually gray or black proximally, 0.6–2 cm.

Spikes

1; floral scales blackish to purplish brown;

proximal 1–7 scales empty, obovate or trigonous-obovate, 4–20 mm;

margins white or paler; as wide as dark portion;

apex blunt;

distal scales obovate to ovate-lanceolate;

margins hyaline, 1 mm wide or wider.

Discussion

Coastal bogs and marshes. 0–50 m. Est. ID, WA; north to AK, east to WI, southeast to CO; Eurasia. Native.

Eriophorum chamissonis is a lovely plant with large, shiny, dense heads of long, red-brown or bronze hairs.

Meadows, bogs, shores, usually peaty, acidic substrates. 900–1800 m. BW, Casc, ECas, Est, WV. CA, ID, NV, WA; north to Alaska, east to Newfoundland and DE, southeast to CO; Eurasia. Native.
