California damasonium, fringed water plantain

Leaves

erect, linear to narrowly ovate, 5–35 cm;

leaf blades lanceolate to ovate, 3–9 × 0.5–3 cm;

margins entire;

petioles 3–15 cm.

Inflorescences

racemes or panicles, generally longer than leaves;

bracts broadly ovate-lanceolate; thin; dry.

Flowers

sepals oblong or ovate, 4–55 mm, green, hooded or not;

petals triangular- to square-shaped, 6–10 mm, white with basal yellow spot, rarely pink;

margins erose distally;

stamens 2–3 mm;

anthers red;

pistils 6–10.

Fruits

3–5.5 mm, horned by enlarged styles;

beak 3–6 mm.
