Habit Shrubs, burled; bark reddish, shredding. Plants 1.5–4(–7) m. Leaves: petiole 0.5–1 mm; blade dark green adaxially, 1.8–5.5 × 0.8–2.3 cm, base cuneate, apex acute.

spreading to erect, branching, cinereous-tomentulose.

usually alternate, rarely opposite, bifacial;

blade narrowly elliptic, elliptic, or ovate, coriaceous, margins entire, strongly revolute, abaxial surface densely white- to cinereous-tomentose, adaxial glabrous.

dense panicles, 4–12-flowered, (axis cinereous-tomentulose).

stigma minute.

Drupes

red to almost black, subglobose, dry, with smooth exocarp and thin pulpy layer;

pyrenes 5, connate into smooth, solid stone.

5, connate.

Xylococcus bicolor has a limited distribution in southern California, occurring on the coastal plain and in the Peninsular and Transverse ranges of Los Angeles County to San Diego County, and on Santa Catalina Island.
