Stems

angular, sometimes lignescent at base, from subterranean, branched caudex.

Leaves

leaflet blades usually ovate, rarely orbiculate to lanceolate or panduriform, margins deeply to shallowly lobed or entire, sinus 0–18.2 mm, lateral leaflets 1.3–6.3 × 0.6–4.3 cm, terminal leaflet 1.8–7.2 × 0.9–4.6 cm, surfaces strigose.

Inflorescences

with (1 or)2–5 flower-bearing nodes.

Peduncles

stout, lignescent, (2.4–)5–21.5 cm, 0.8–1.3 mm diam.

Flowers

bracteoles 1.5–4.2 mm, equal to or longer than calyx tube;

calyx tube 1.3–3.6 mm, lobes 1–2.5 mm;

banner pinkish, 6.7–13.3 mm;

wings light pink, 7–9 mm;

keel 8–13 mm, beak slender, distinctly curved, 1 mm diam., projected away from face of banner, protruding well above wings.

Legumes

cylindric, laterally compressed, 3–9.6 × (0.3–)0.4–0.8 cm, glabrous or sparsely strigose.

Seeds

5–10, faintly mottled, with cellular or waxy covering.

Vines

perennial, with thick taproot.

Discussion

Strophostyles helvola has flowers with a prominently curved, slender keel beak that projects upward from the keel lamina and outward away from the face of the banner petal and cylindrical fruits.

Phaseolus peduncularis (Muhlenberg) W. P. C. Barton, P. trilobus Michaux ex Richard, and P. vexillatus Walter are illegitimate names that pertain here.
