Discussion | Of conservation concern. Variety scribneri is poorly known and seldom collected. It is distinguished by its relatively larger heads and narrower leaves and its indument (in a region where var. integerrimus is notably glabrate). Variety exaltatus is the most widespread and variable variety of the species. Eradiate plants of var. exaltatus have been recognized as var. vaseyi; there appears to be no populational integrity to the eradiate condition.
