Arizona ragwort

Habit Perennials, (20–)30–40(–60) cm (rhizomes suberect or weakly spreading). Annuals, 20–50(–60+) cm (taproots relatively thin, twisted).
Herbage

lanate-arachnose or tomentose, unevenly glabrescent.

Leaves

(often purplish abaxially) reduced distally;

progressively reduced distally (basal usually withering before flowering);

petiolate (petioles winged);

blades oblanceolate to spatulate, 4–7 × 1.5–3 cm, bases tapered, margins incised (distal leaves sessile, bractlike).

Discussion

Senecio arizonicus is reputedly in southern New Mexico (W. C. Martin and C. R. Hutchins 1980); that seems unlikely and should be checked.
