Habit | Perennials; (compact); caudex usually simple, (cespitose); (silvery) pubescent throughout, trichomes 6–8-rayed, rays furcate near base, fused at base, (umbonate, strongly tuberculate throughout). | Perennials; (diminutive); caudex branched, (densely cespitose, mound-forming); densely pubescent, trichomes (flaring, giving a shaggy appearance), usually 4–5-rayed, rays furcate or bifurcate, (strongly tuberculate throughout). |
Stems | several from base, decumbent, (unbranched, slender), 0.5–1 dm. |
few to several from base, erect, (from basal tuft), 0.1–0.2(–0.3) dm, (not or just barely exceeding leaves). |
Basal leaves | (strongly rosulate); blade usually oblanceolate or broader, sometimes triangular, 2–3.5 cm (width 5–10 mm), margins entire or with 1 or 2 broad teeth, (apex acute). |
blade spatulate to oblanceolate, 0.5–1.5 cm, (base gradually narrowed to petiole), margins entire. |
Cauline leaves | blade oblanceolate, 1–1.5 cm (width 2–4 mm), margins entire, (apex acute). |
(absent or few); similar to basal, blade linear. |
Racemes | congested, (elongated moderately in fruit). |
dense, (few-flowered). |
Flowers | sepals linear, 5–7 mm; petals spatulate, 8–10 mm, (apex often somewhat truncate). |
sepals (pale yellow), oblong to elliptic, 4–5 mm, (median pair usually thickened apically, cucullate); petals (bright yellow), lingulate, 6–8 mm. |
Fruiting pedicels | (spreading, straight or somewhat sigmoid), 5–8 mm. |
(loosely sigmoid), 3–5 mm. |
Fruits | (erect), didymous, suborbicular, inflated, 2–5(–8) × 4–8(–10)mm, (coriaceous, base slightly cordate or nearly obtuse, sinus obsolete or absent, apical sinus broad and deep); valves (retaining seeds after dehiscence), pubescent, trichomes appressed, (silvery on ovaries and immature fruit); replum obovate to oblong, as wide as or wider than fruit, rarely somewhat constricted basally, apex obtuse; ovules 4 per ovary; style 5–7 mm. |
lanceolate, compressed apically, 2.5–3(–4) mm; valves pubescent, trichomes spreading, (appearing fuzzy), rarely with trichomes inside; ovules 4–8 per ovary; style 2.5–4 mm. |
Seeds | slightly flattened. |
plump, (oblong). |

Discussion | Physaria nelsonii is morphologically similar to 73. P. pycnantha, which traditionally was included in a broader P. nelsonii. These allopatric species are distinguished by styles equal to or exceeding the length of fruit and fruiting stems overtopped by basal leaves (P. nelsonii) versus styles shorter than fruits and fruiting stems usually exserted beyond basal leaves (P. pycnantha).
