Habit Herbs 5(–10) cm, canescent, taprooted. Herbs short-lived, 10–25 cm, matted, densely hairy.

ascending-erect, several from taproot, profusely branched at base, elongated stem internode 1–3 cm.

Habitat Barren tuffaceous or gravelly clay bluffs and gullied riverbanks, usually associated with junipers, sagebrush, and Eriogonum. Mountain meadows, gravel bars, streambeds, lakeshores, sand or rocks, with sage­brush, lodgepole pine forests and above timberline.

Discussion

Variety cusickii is known from a few populations near Unity in Baker County, Oregon (K. A. Weitemier 2010) and near Donnelly and McCall in Valley County, Idaho.

Variety utahensis is widespread in the Rocky and Great Basin mountains from central Idaho and western Montana southward to northwestern New Mexico and northeastern Arizona (Chuska Mountains in Apache County), westward to eastern Oregon, northern Nevada, and eastern Lassen County, California, and disjunct in the White Mountains on the California-Nevada border.
