Habit Herbs 5(–10) cm, canescent, taprooted. Herbs 12–35 cm, silvery-silky-pubescent.
Stems

ascending-erect, several from taproot, profusely branched at base, elongated stem internode 1–3 cm.

leaflet blades 10–25 mm, surfaces hairy.

Habitat Barren tuffaceous or gravelly clay bluffs and gullied riverbanks, usually associated with junipers, sagebrush, and Eriogonum. Dry rocks, open conifer forests, especially Jeffrey and ponderosa pine forests.

Discussion

Variety cusickii is known from a few populations near Unity in Baker County, Oregon (K. A. Weitemier 2010) and near Donnelly and McCall in Valley County, Idaho.

Variety sellulus is known from the southern Cascade Ranges and Sierra Nevada westward to the North Coast Ranges in northern California and southern Oregon, and eastward through the Owyhee Desert to the lower Snake River Plains in Idaho and the headwaters of the Humboldt River in Nevada.
