Habit Herbs 5(–10) cm, canescent, taprooted. Herbs 25–60 cm, hairy.

ascending-erect, several from taproot, profusely branched at base, elongated stem internode 1–3 cm.

Habitat Barren tuffaceous or gravelly clay bluffs and gullied riverbanks, usually associated with junipers, sagebrush, and Eriogonum. Meadows, vernally moist areas in pine forests and sagebrush.

Discussion

Variety cusickii is known from a few populations near Unity in Baker County, Oregon (K. A. Weitemier 2010) and near Donnelly and McCall in Valley County, Idaho.

Variety confertus is found in Douglas, Esmeralda, Lyon, Mineral, Ormsby, and Washoe counties in Nevada, and in the high Cascades, high Sierra Nevada, Transverse Ranges, Great Basin province, and into the desert mountains in California.
