Habit Herbs 5(–10) cm, canescent, taprooted. Herbs (7–)10–15(–35) cm, pilose to ± hirsute-bristly.
Stems

ascending-erect, several from taproot, profusely branched at base, elongated stem internode 1–3 cm.

loosely tufted, subacaulescent or shortly caulescent, rarely branched.

Leaves

basal and cauline;

leaflet blades 10–25 mm, surfaces hairy.

Habitat Barren tuffaceous or gravelly clay bluffs and gullied riverbanks, usually associated with junipers, sagebrush, and Eriogonum. Bluffs, barrens, sandy or gravelly hillsides among sagebrush, pinyon-juniper woodlands.

Discussion

Variety cusickii is known from a few populations near Unity in Baker County, Oregon (K. A. Weitemier 2010) and near Donnelly and McCall in Valley County, Idaho.

Variety aridus is found widely scattered over southeastern Oregon, southwestern Idaho, southward in Nevada to Washoe, Nye, and Lincoln counties, eastward into adjacent Iron and Washington counties in Utah, and northward in the Columbia Basin in Oregon and Washington; it is reported in northwestern Arizona and is rarely found in eastern California in Mono County.
