Cusick's lupine

Habit Herbs 5(–10) cm, canescent, taprooted.
Stems

ascending-erect, several from taproot, profusely branched at base, elongated stem internode 1–3 cm.

Leaves

basal and cauline;

leaflet blades 10–25 mm, surfaces hairy.

Racemes

2–10 cm, not exserted beyond leaves, or only partially so, loose.

Peduncles

1–6 cm (together with racemes 2–10 cm);

bract 2–3.5 mm.

Pedicels

2.5–4 mm.

Flowers

in 6–9 whorls, 7–10 mm;

corolla bluish, banner not or scarcely recurved, 2.5–3 mm wide.

Habitat Barren tuffaceous or gravelly clay bluffs and gullied riverbanks, usually associated with junipers, sagebrush, and Eriogonum.

Discussion

Variety cusickii is known from a few populations near Unity in Baker County, Oregon (K. A. Weitemier 2010) and near Donnelly and McCall in Valley County, Idaho.
