Habit Herbs blue-green, acaulous or short-caulescent, 10–30 cm, robust, glabrous; caudex simple or 2–3-branched, with persistent leaf sheaths weathering into fibrous thatch, with persistent, gray peduncles; taproot thick, sometimes horizontal, sometimes with shallow, irregular, tuberlike swellings. Herbs green, acaulous or short-caulescent, 15–65 cm, robust, densely scaberulous or glabrous; caudex simple, with persistent leaf bases remaining intact or gradually weathering into long, narrow chartaceous scales, without persistent peduncles; taproot slender.

Discussion

Lomatium minus is strongly glaucous with purple or pink petals, narrow leaflets, and an inflated stem like that of L. columbianum. However, L. minus is a much smaller plant, and the peduncle is inflated unevenly. In mature fruits, the wings curve back, making each mericarp rounded in cross section like a bread roll. Lomatium minus is endemic to the Blue Mountains region of central Oregon, with an outlying population in northern Malheur County. It is sometimes confused with L. tuberosum, which has similar petal colors and leaflets but is endemic to central Washington. Lomatium minus is a culturally significant food plant to members of the Sahaptin Native nations (D. E. Moerman 1998).

Varieties 2 (2 in the flora).

In Lomatium marginatum, hairs on the rays and peduncles can be dense to nearly absent and are rounded rather than the sharp scabers typical of many Lomatium species. It resembles L. caruifolium, which has more involucel bractlets per umbel, shorter mature pedicels, and is sometimes scabrous or hairy. The differences between L. marginatum and L. caruifolium var. denticulatum can be subtle. The two varieties of L. marginatum often have been separated by flower color, but this can vary within populations and sometimes with age in a single plant. Fruit shape seems a better trait for distinguishing them. Reports of hybrids between L. hooveri and L. marginatum are probably attributable to L. marginatum var. purpureum.
