Varieties 3 (3 in the flora). Eriogonum jamesii is a nectar source for the rare Spalding dotted-blue butterfly (Euphilotes spaldingi). Eriogonum polypodum is found in the southern Sierra Nevada in Fresno and Tulare counties, with the bulk of its scattered populations west of Mt. Whitney.
