Varieties 3 (3 in the flora). Eriogonum jamesii is a nectar source for the rare Spalding dotted-blue butterfly (Euphilotes spaldingi). Eriogonum novonudum is known only from a few scattered populations primarily in the Leslie Gulch area of Malheur County. This tall, openly branched species is easily distinguished from the related E. ochrocephalum var. calcareum, in which the inflorescence is reduced to a capitate cluster of involucres.
