Varieties 2 (2 in the flora). Eriogonum elatum is widely distributed but rather scattered throughout its range. The plants are occasionally seen in the garden. Inflorescence branches were chewed or made into an infusion and taken as a physic by some Native American people (D. E. Moerman 1986). Eriogonum argillosum is rare to locally infrequent in coastal central California. It was last seen in Santa Clara County in 1895 and now is almost certainly extirpated there. Otherwise, it is found in the San Benito River Canyon (San Benito County) area and east of San Lucas (Monterey County). This is the most distinct of the five species in the E. eastwoodianum complex.
