Herbs, monocarpic, 5–20(–25) dm, strigose or glabrous; taproot often chambered. |
Herbs, spreading, loosely cespitose, probably polygamodioecious, 0.5–1 × 1–5 dm, tomen-tose to sericeous. |
caudex absent; aerial flowering stems usually 1, not fistulose, 2–13 dm, strigose or glabrous. |
caudex spreading; aerial flowering stems weakly erect, slender, solid, not fistulose, arising at nodes of caudex branches and at distal nodes of short, nonflowering aerial branches, (0.4–)0.5–0.8 dm, tomentose to sericeous, with a whorl of 2–4, leaflike bracts ca. midlength, these similar to leaf blades, 0.3–0.8 × 0.1–0.25 cm. |
basal and sometimes cauline; basal petiolate, petiole 2–6 cm, stigose to woolly or glabrous, blade linear-lanceolate or lanceolate to oblanceolate to spatulate, (3–)5–20 × 0.3–2 cm, strigose, becoming glabrous and green on both surfaces except for margins and midvein; cauline sessile, blade linear-oblanceolate to lanceolate, 1–9 × 0.3–0.8(–1) cm, similar to basal blade. |
in tight basal rosettes; petiole 0.05–0.2 cm, silky-tomentose; blade oblanceolate to narrowly spatulate, 0.4–1 × 0.1–0.3(–0.4) cm, silky-tomentose and silvery abaxially, less so and greenish adaxially, margins entire, plane. |
2–10 dm; branches strigose or glabrous; bracts semileaflike proximally, linear to linear-lanceolate, 2–9 × 1–3 mm, scalelike distally, triangular, 0.8–5 × 0.5–2 mm. |
capitate, 0.5–1.5 cm wide; branches absent; bracts absent immediately below involucre. |
erect, straight or curving upward, 0.5–3.5 cm, strigose or glabrous. |
|
turbinate to campanulate, 2–4(–4.5) × 2–4(–4.5) mm, strigose or glabrous; teeth 1–1.8 mm. |
1 per node, turbinate, (4–)5–6 × 2.5–4 mm; teeth 6–8, erect, 0.5–1 mm. |
1.5–2.5 mm in anthesis, 3–6 mm in fruit; perianth yellow to yellowish green, rarely maroon in anthesis, often reddish or maroon in fruit, glabrous; tepals lanceolate; stamens 1.5–3 mm; filaments glabrous. |
5–7 mm, including 0.5–0.8(–1) mm stipelike base; perianth whitish to pinkish or rose-red, glabrous; tepals monomorphic, obovate; stamens exserted, 4–5 mm; filaments pilose proximally. |
yellowish green to reddish brown, 5–9 mm, glabrous, 3-winged entire length, beakless. |

Varieties 2 (2 in the flora). The mature reddish roots of Eriogonum alatum can be distinctively chambered. The Navajo (Diné) people consider the species to be a “life medicine” (L. C. Wyman and S. K. Harris 1951), using a mixture of shredded roots and water primarily to treat internal ailments. The species is used also as a ceremonial medicine (P. A. Vestal 1952). The Zuni use it as an emetic for stomachaches (S. Camazine and R. A. Bye 1980). (Discussion copyrighted by Flora of North America; reprinted with permission.) |
Of conservation concern. Eriogonum kelloggii is known from only five occurrences on Red Mountain, Mendocino County. It is listed as endangered by the state of California, and the Bureau of Land Management considers it a species of “special” status. It is also a candidate for federal endangered status, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A long sought, undescribed Eriogonum from Black Butte in Glenn County remains to be rediscovered. J. T. Howell (19120, CAS) made a single specimen of it from a single mat that he saw in 1943. The leaf blades are small (3–4 × 1.5–2 mm) and held on a short petiole (1–2 mm). Based on the vegetative features, that plant appears to be related to E. kelloggii. (Discussion copyrighted by Flora of North America; reprinted with permission.) |
