subalpine daisy, subalpine fleabane, wandering daisy, wandering fleabane

Cascade fleabane

Habit Perennials, 5–55(–70) cm; rhizomatous, fibrous-rooted, caudices usually simple, thick. Perennials, 5–15 cm; taprooted, caudices woody, branches usually vertical or horizontal (2–10 cm), sheathed by persistent leaf bases.
Stems

erect to basally ascending, hirsute to hirsuto- or strigoso-villous (hairs loosely appressed, slightly crinkled), sometimes loosely strigose distally (var. thompsonii), eglandular.

erect, glabrous or sparsely villous, sparsely minutely glandular.

Leaves

basal (persistent) and cauline;

basal blades linear-oblanceolate to broadly lanceolate or spatulate, (30–)50–100 × 5–25 mm;

cauline gradually reduced distally (bases distinctly subclasping, except when greatly reduced), margins entire, faces hirsute, hirsuto-villous, sparsely villosulous, glabrate, or glabrous, eglandular.

basal (persistent) and cauline;

basal blades sometimes 3-nerved, oblanceolate to obovate or spatulate, 25–90 × 5–17 mm, margins entire or dentate on distal 1/2 or near apices, faces glabrous, sparsely minutely glandular;

cauline blades lanceolate to ovate, smaller than basal, often relatively even-sized distally (bases clasping to subclasping).

Involucres

5–9(–12) × 10–22(–25) mm.

5–8 × 8–14 mm.

Ray florets

30–80;

corollas usually blue to rose purple or pink, sometimes white to pale blue, 12–20(–25) mm (mostly 1.5–3 mm wide), laminae coiling.

30–50;

corollas white, less commonly purplish, 6–10 mm, laminae not coiling or reflexing.

Disc corollas

3.5–4.5 mm.

3.7–4.4 mm.

Phyllaries

in 2–3(–4) series (margins usually ciliate), abaxially sparsely to moderately villoso-hirsute, usually eglandular, sometimes sparsely gland-dotted apically, rarely sparsely so over adaxial faces (especially in var. thompsonii).

in 2–3 series, sparsely to moderately hirsuto-villous, sometimes sparsely minutely glandular.

Heads

1.

1(–3) (on branches from proximal axils).

Cypselae

2.5–2.8 mm, (4–)5(–7)-nerved, faces sparsely strigose;

pappi: outer of setae, inner of 20–32 bristles.

flattened, 1.9–2.2 mm, 2-nerved, faces sparsely strigose or glabrous;

pappi: outer of setae, inner of 14–20 bristles.
