needle-leaf fleabane

Habit Perennials, often short-lived, 10–100 cm; fibrous- or taprooted, caudices woody, usually simple, stems sometimes rooting adventitiously. Perennials, 4–18 cm; taprooted, caudex branches relatively short, thick.
Stems

erect to sprawling or decumbent (small leaf tufts in axils of larger leaves), sparsely strigose to glabrate, eglandular.

erect (greenish), usually closely appressed-strigose, sometimes glabrate, eglandular.

Leaves

basal (and proximal cauline withering by flowering) and cauline;

cauline blades elliptic to obovate, mostly 10–40(–50) × 5–13 mm, usually relatively even-sized along stems, margins entire or with 1–2 distal pairs of acute, mucronulate teeth or lobes, faces sparsely and loosely strigose to hirsuto-villous, eglandular.

mostly basal or basal (persistent, persistent portion relatively long and slender-fibrous) and cauline (greenish);

basal blades 1-nerved linear to linear-oblanceolate or oblanceolate or narrowly spatulate, (20–)30–80 × (0.5–)1–3 mm;

cauline reduced distally (bases attenuate, not thickened and whitish-indurate) margins entire (apices obtuse or rounded), faces abaxially glabrous or glabrate, adaxially sparsely strigose, eglandular.

Involucres

2.5–3.5 × 7–10 mm.

(3.5–)4-–6.5 × (5–)6–13 mm.

Ray florets

45–80;

corollas 5–8 mm, laminae not or slightly coiling, white, sometimes drying pinkish.

15–55;

corollas white to pink, 4–8 mm, laminae coiling.

Disc corollas

2–3.1 mm.

(2.8–)3.5–4.3 mm.

Phyllaries

in 3–4 series, sparsely strigose to hirsuto-villous or glabrate, sometimes minutely glandular.

in 2–4 series (greenish or sometimes purple, margins thickened), strigose to loosely strigoso-hirsute, sometimes more densely so on distal 1/3, sparsely minutely glandular.

Heads

1–5 (usually from branches distal to midstem).

1(–3 rarely, from branches at midstem).

Cypselae

1–1.4 mm, 2-nerved, faces sparsely strigose;

pappi: outer of setae, inner of 15–27 bristles.

2.2–2.9 mm, 2-nerved, faces and margins villoso-hirsute, sometimes more densely so on nerves;

pappi: outer of setae, inner of 15–25 bristles.

2n

= 18, 27, 36 (from Mexico, Central America, South America).
