Discussion | Populations of Diplacus johnstonii occur in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. The populations in northwestern Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties were noted by D. M. Thompson (2005) to be intermediate between D. constrictus and D. johnstonii. Diplacus brandegeei is known only from Santa Catalina (Los Angeles County), Santa Cruz (Santa Barbara County), and Guadalupe (Baja California) islands. The earliest name for the species, Mimulus latifolius A. Gray, was first transferred to Diplacus as D. latifolius (A. Gray) G. L. Nesom, but that name is a later homonym of D. latifolius Nuttall.
