Habit Shrubs or subshrubs, relatively erect, sparsely pilosulous or glabrous proximal to inflorescences. Shrubs, relatively erect, stiffly-branching, silky- or velvety-pubescent distally.
Stems

3–6(–12) dm, glandular-tuberculate distally.

5–10 dm, verruculose distally.

Inflorescences

spikes, relatively densely flowered, not involucrate, 11–15 mm diam.;

axis not to partially visible, 1–2(–2.5) cm;

bracts persistent or deciduous, (2.5–)3–5.5 mm.

spikes, densely flowered, obviously involucrate (proximalmost several whorls of bracts subtending rudimentary buds), 11.5–16 mm diam.;

Calyces

asymmetric, recessed opposite banner, 5.2–7.8 mm, sparsely pilosulous;

tube 2.5–3.1 mm, with 0–2 glands between ribs, lobes lanceolate-acuminate, each with several elongated, pricklelike glands (gland spurs).

Discussion

Dalea tentaculoides occurs in Santa Cruz and Pima counties. It is in the Center for Plant Conservation’s National Collection of Endangered Plants.

Plants of Dalea pulchra are attractive in flower. The spikes shatter quickly at anthesis; legumes and seeds are seldom seen.
