Stems

(2.5–)3–7 dm, eglandular or sparsely glandular-punctate or -verruculose.

Inflorescences

spikes, loosely flowered, not involucrate, 6–8 mm diam.;

axis visible, (1–)1.5–7.5(–9) cm;

bracts persistent, 2.6–4 mm.

Peduncles

0.4–4 cm.

Stamens

(5–)8–10 (sometimes only 5 functional), 6.5–8.5 mm, filaments distinct to 1.9–2.9 mm, anthers 0.4–0.6 mm.

Corollas

red-violet to magenta or purple;

not conventionally papilionaceous;

banner 2.8–4.3 mm, blade ovate-cordate, ± peltate, ± cucullate, 1.8–3.1 × 1.8–2.8 mm; epistemonous petals attached near middle of stamen tube, blades 2–3.8 × 1.5–2.2 mm.

Calyces

subsymmetric, 3.3–4.5(–4.8) mm, villosulous throughout or on lobes;

tube 1.8–2.5 mm, with 1–4 glands between ribs, lobes triangular to lanceolate, ovate-acuminate, or -apiculate.

Legumes

2.5–3.1 mm, pilosulous distally and dotted with small glands.

Seeds

1.8–1.3 mm.

Perennial

herbs, prostrate, densely to sparsely pilosulous or glabrous.

Principal

leaves 1–3 cm;

leaflets 9–15, blades obovate to broadly oblanceolate, 3–10(–12) mm.

Discussion

Varieties 3 (1 in the flora).

Two varieties of Dalea pringlei occur in Mexico. Variety multijuga Barneby is found in Chihuahua, Sinaloa, and Sonora, while var. oxyphyllidia Barneby is restricted to the Río Mayo area of Sonora.
