Discussion | Clarkia jolonensis is known only from Monterey County, mainly in the Outer South Coast Ranges. It is scarcely distinguishable morphologically from C. bottae except for seed color, but attempts to produce hybrids have been unsuccessful. Although in describing C. jolonensis Parnell suggested that its range did not overlap with that of C. bottae, the ranges in fact overlap extensively in Monterey County. Clarkia exilis is of limited distribution, known primarily from the southern Sierra Nevada Foothills and Tehachapi Mountain area in Kern and Tulare counties, with unverified reports from Fresno, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties. It is listed as rare by the California Native Plant Society. Clarkia exilis is derived from C. unguiculata and is closely related to C. springvillensis and C. tembloriensis.
