Habit Herbs strigillose proximally, glabrous and often glaucous distally. Herbs strigillose proximally, usually also glandular puberulent distally, or glabrate.

Leaves

blade lateral lobes usually poorly developed or absent, terminal lobe lanceolate, to 5 × 2.8 cm, margins irregularly serrate-dentate.

blade sometimes purple-dotted, lateral lobes often absent, sometimes present but poorly developed, terminal lobe narrowly ovate to ovate or subcordate, to 7 × 3 cm, margins serrate.

Flowers

usually opening at sunset;

buds usually without free tips, sometimes with apical free tips less than 1 mm;

floral tube orange-brown inside, 3.5–6 mm;

petals bright yellow, sometimes red-dotted in proximal 1/2, fading pale orange, 3.5–7 mm.

Discussion

Subspecies lancifolia is known from east of the Sierra Nevada in southern Mono and Inyo counties, California, and adjacent Mineral County, Nevada.

Subspecies integrior is known from southern Harney County, Oregon, southward nearly throughout Nevada to Esmeralda and Lincoln counties and to Mono and northeastern Inyo counties, California, and often forms large colonies on banks and flats in Great Basin Desert. It intergrades with subspp. aurantiaca and cruciformis, and hybridizes with Chylismia brevipes subsp. brevipes.
