Discussion | Variety coltonii occurs almost exclusively below the coal measures of the Mesaverde Group sandstone. However, the type specimen was collected on another substrate near Richfield, Sevier County, Utah. The primary range of var. coltonii is in Carbon, Emery, Garfield, Grand, Kane, Millard, Sevier, and Wayne counties in Utah, and a disjunct population occurs in Montezuma County in Colorado.
