Fritillaria glauca

black lily, Indian rice

Habit Perennial herb from a small, scaly bulb and numerous rice-sized offset bulblets, the sturdy, unbranched, glabrous stem 2-5 dm. tall.
Leaves

Leaves in 1-3 whorls of 5-9, and a few scattered upward, lanceolate, 4-10 cm. long.

Flowers

Flowers 2-7 in a loose raceme, spreading to pendant, narrowly bell-shaped, ill-smelling, dark greenish-brown to brownish-purple, sometimes streaked with yellow but not mottled;

tepals elliptic, distinct, 20-30 mm. long and 7-12 mm. broad, ridged lengthwise on the inner surface;

filaments 6, slender, twice the length of the anthers;

styles attached to each other about 1/3 of their length.
