Habit Glabrous, glaucous perennial herbs from a deep taproot, the 1-several stems 1-5 dm. tall.
Leaves

Leaves mostly basal, petiolate, repeatedly ternately divided into linear segments.

Flowers

Flowers solitary on axillary or terminal, scapose peduncles 6-20 cm. long;

receptacle cone-shaped with a spreading outer rim 1-2 mm. wide;

sepals 2, coherent into a hood-like structure that is pushed off as the petals open;

petals 4, obovate with a wedge-shaped base, 8-40 mm. long, pale yellow to orange;

stamens numerous;

style absent;

stigmas 4, linear, erect.

Fruits

Capsule linear.
