Habit Scapose, perennial herbs without rhizomes but with numerous bulblets on the roots, the flowering stems 1-3 dm. tall, Glabrous to glandular-pubescent, scapose, perennial herbs with fibrous roots, the scapes erect, simple, 10-45 cm. tall.
Leaves

Leaves basal, usually glabrous, the blades ovate to deltoid-elliptic, usually entire, narrowed abruptly to petioles + as long to nearly as long.

Leaves all basal, 2.5-30 cm. long and 0.7-7 cm. wide, petiolate, the petiole winged;

leaf blade narrowly to broadly elliptic or ovate, tapering to petiole, entire to dentate or denticulate.

Flowers

Flowers 2-15 in an umbel, terminal on the scape, 4- or 5-parted;

calyx purple-flecked, with lanceolate lobes 6-8 mm. long;

corolla 15-25 mm. long, the lobes deep magenta to light orchid, grading to yellow at the base and on the tube, the base of the tube reddish-purple;

stamens clustered around the style, opposite the petals, the filaments united to form a tube 2-4 mm. long, deep reddish-purple;

anthers 4-6 mm. long, deep red to purple;

style single, slightly exceeding the stamens, the stigma not enlarged.

Inflorescence a 1- to 7-flowered umbel, with lanceolate bracts 2.5-10 mm. long; pedicles 0.5-4.5 cm. long;

calyx green, 5-11 mm. long, 5-lobed, the tube 1.5-2 mm. long;

corolla tube white with purplish, wavy ring, the 5 lobes magenta, 15-20 mm. long, strongly reflexed;

stamens 5, opposite the petals;

filaments distinct, dark maroon, 0.5-1.8 mm. long;

stigma not enlarged compared to style.

Fruits

Capsule cylindric-ovoid, 7-12 mm. long, with the tip dropping off to release the seeds.

Capsules greenish to tannish with purple speckles, ovoid, 6-16 mm. long, glabrous.

Habitat Woods and prairies, at low elevations in our area. Moist basaltic slopes, cliff faces, in coniferous forests along streams, or in alpine meadows.
Distribution
Occurring west of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California.
