Habit Fleshy annuals, the stems 1-10 cm. tall. Glabrous perennial from a deep-seated, globose, tuberous root 5-20 mm. in diameter, the 1-several flowering stems 6-20 cm. tall.

Basal leaves usually in flattened rosettes 0.5-6 cm. wide, the blades strongly reddish, narrowly rhombic to ovate, spatulate or ladle-shaped;
