Chambers's Indian paintbrush

Habit Clustered perennial, the stems 1-3 dm. tall, erect or ascending from a woody base, usually unbranched, villous to glabrate.
Leaves

Leaves linear-lanceolate, sometimes broader, usually entire but the upper sometimes lobed, glabrous to pubescent.

Flowers

Inflorescence showy, usually crimson but occasionally scarlet or yellow, elongating in fruit;

bracts oblong-ovate, rounded, entire with 1-2 pairs of short, lateral lobes, puberulent;

calyx 15-25 mm. long, cleft above and below, its primary lobes divided into 2 blunt segments 3-6 mm. long;

corolla 20-35 mm. long, the galea much shorter than the tube and 4-5 times as long as the dark green lower lip;

stamens 4.

Habitat Meadows and open slopes at moderate to high elevations in the mountains. Forest openings, embankments, and rock outcroppings typically where moist.
Distribution
In the North Cascades and northeast corner of Washington; British Columbia and Alberta south to Nevada and east to New Mexico.
