Habit Perennial herb from long, thickened roots, usually with many stems from near the base, 2.5-7 dm. tall.
Leaves

Leaves mostly alternate, with petioles 0.3-7 cm. long, the blades deltoid-ovate, sub-cordate, toothed, 2-11 cm. long and 1-6 cm. wide.

Flowers

Heads discoid, cylindric, several to many in a sub-umbelliform inflorescence;

involucre 7-12 mm. high, imbricate, striate, the outer bracts tipped with a slender appendage;

corollas white, 10-40 in each head;

filaments exerted, yellow;

pappus of barbellate bristles.

Fruits

Achene 10-ribbed.
