Habit Scapose, slender annual, usually glabrous, often with several scapes from the base, 3-40 cm. tall, with milky juice. Scapose, stout perennial, 2-7 dm. tall, somewhat hairy when young, the juice milky.
Leaves

Leaves oblanceolate, toothed or pinnatifid to entire, up to 15 cm. long and 1.5 cm. wide, mostly basal, but a few on the base of the stem.

Leaves all basal, oblanceolate to broadly linear, entire to deeply pinnatifid, 10-25 cm. long and 1-3 cm. wide.
Flowers

Heads solitary, small;

involucre 5-13 mm. high in flower, elongating in fruit, with a few soft hairs;

corollas all ligulate, yellow.

Head solitary, large and many-flowered;

involucre 1.5-4 cm. high, its outer bracts broad and short, the inner narrower and elongate;

corollas all ligulate, yellow.
Fruits

Achene body 2-5 mm. long, prominently ribbed or winged, tapering to a slender beak 2-3 times as long.

Habitat Dry, open areas at low to mid-elevations. Prairies, balds, meadows, and forest openings, often where seasonally dry, from low to middle elevations in the mountains.
Distribution
Occurring chiefly east of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Arizona.
