Habit Plants biennial or rarely short-lived perennial, glabrous except petioles, glaucous; caudices naked.
Stems

straight, 2–10 dm.

Basal leaves

oblanceolate, oblong, lanceolate, or rarely ovate; (2.8)3.5–8.8(11) × (0.7)1–2.5(3.5) cm;

margins entire or sinuate;

petioles ciliate.

Cauline leaves

lanceolate to oblong, 1.8–4.5(6) × 0.5–1.6(2.4) cm, bases amplexicaul to auriculate, sessile.

Inflorescences

lax, fruiting pedicels horizontal to divaricate; (2.5)3–5.5(6.5) mm.

Flowers

buds oblong-linear;

sepals linear-oblong; erect, 5–7(8) mm;

petals spatulate to oblanceolate; (6.6)7.5–10(11.5) × 1–1.8(2) mm, purple to magenta;

claws (3)3.5–5(5.5) mm; narrowest at base;

petal margins not crisped;

filaments subequal; (4.5)6–9(10) mm;

anthers exserted, linear to narrowly oblong, circinately coiled after dehiscence, nectar glands confluent;

ovules 44–58 per ovary;

styles cylindrical or rarely subclavate, 0.5–1.5(2) mm;

stigmas entire;

gynophore (1)2.5–6(7) mm.

Fruits

terete, torulose; (2)2.4–5(6.5) cm × 0.7–1(1.3) mm.

Seeds

0.7–1.5 × 0.5–0.8 mm.

Discussion

Shady slopes and canyons, pinyon-juniper and oak-woodland communities, streamsides, riverbanks. Flowering May–Jul. 300–1600 m. BW, Lava. Native. Endemic.

This Oregon endemic is currently known only from Baker, Grant, and Wheeler counties.
