Western North America. 4 varieties; 2 varieties treated in Flora.

Varieties of S. foliaceum intergrade with S. spathulatum and S. cusickii where their ranges overlap.

Meadows, forest openings, stream margins. Flowering Jul–Sep. 1000–1900 m. Sisk. CA, ID, WA. Native.
