Habit Herbs perennial or biennial, (1)2–7 dm; caudices button-like, with fleshy, fibrous, unbranched roots.

mostly basal;

cauline progressively reduced distally; ± petiolate;

basal and lower cauline elliptic, lanceolate, linear, oblanceolate, rounded-deltate, rarely suborbiculate, bases tapered or truncate to cordate;

margins entire or dentate;

distal becoming sessile and bract-like.

elliptic to lanceolate or oblanceolate, rarely rounded-deltate or suborbiculate;

basal and proximal indistinctly petiolate.

Inflorescences

corymb-like arrays;

bracts 0 or inconspicuous.

Discussion

Western North America. 5 varieties; 3 varieties treated in Flora.

Open woodlands, sagebrush, meadows, grasslands. Flowering Apr–Jul. 50–2700 m. All ecoregions except Est. CA, ID, NV, WA; north to British Columbia, northeast to Saskatchewan, east to WY, southeast to CO. Native.

This is the most variable and widespread variety of the species. Eradiate plants have been recognized by some authors as variety vaseyi. However, both radiate and eradiate plants can be found within the same populations.
