Floating leaves

lenticular to elliptic, 30–110 × 15–45 mm, green;

base cuneate to rounded;

tip acute to rounded;

veins 9–21;

petioles 3.5–26 cm.

Submersed leaves

attached at stem node, not attached to stipules;

stipules 30–90 mm;

tip round to acute;

petioles 20– 130 mm;

blades linear-lanceolate to lance-elliptic, 90–200 × 10–35 mm;

base acute;

margins entire;

tip acute; lacunae in 2–5 rows each side of midrib;

veins 7–15.

Inflorescences

emersed;

spikes cylindric, 20–70 mm;

peduncles terminal; erect to ascending, cylindric, 30–150 mm.

Fruits

sessile, obovoid, 2.7–4.3 × 2.5–3 mm, red to reddish brown, dorsally keeled, laterally ridged;

lateral ridges with blunt to sharp tips;

Discussion

Clear to turbid waters of lakes, streams, and sloughs. 0–2300m. BR, Col, CR, WV. CA, ID, NV, WA; north to British Columbia, east to CT, south to Mexico, Central America, South America; Eurasia. Native.

This species hybridizes with P. alpinus, P. epihydrus, P. gramineus, P. illinoensis, P. natans, and P. richardsonii.
