Stems

short; erect, with a crown of leaves.

Leaves

to 80 cm long; bulbils absent.

Petioles

well developed; up to 33% leaf length, with dense chaffy brown scales proximally, becoming smaller and sparse distally, largely absent from the rachis.

Blades

1-pinnate, narrowly lanceolate; to 70 × 8 cm, tapering to apex, not much reduced in width at base;

microscales narrow, linear to lanceolate; abundant abaxially, absent above.

Pinnae

lanceolate to narrowly oblong; to 4 × 1 cm, usually overlapping and twisted out of plane;

apex cuspidate;

margins regularly dentate with forward-pointing spinetips, acroscopic auricle enlarged, broadly triangular or ovate, cuspidate; sinus mostly lacking but occasionally deep.

Sori

with irregularly lobed indusial margins.

On rocks and cliffs, frequently in sunny locations. 50– 2300 m. BW, Casc, Col, CR, ECas, Lava, Sisk, WV. CA, WA; north to British Columbia. Native.
