Bolander's bluegrass

Habit Plants annual, rarely short-lived perennial, 20–60(70)cm tall, often glaucous; densely cespitose, sterile shoots few.
Culms

nodes terete.

intra- and extravaginal.

Leaves

sheaths closed 50–75% of their length;

ligules 2.5–7 mm;

blades flat (folded), 1.5–5 mm wide; smooth or sparsely scabrous;

cauline blades 3–15 cm; uppermost blades 1–4 cm.

Inflorescences

erect or occasionally slightly nodding, usually eventually open, sometimes interrupted; sparse; (5)10–15(25)cm, 25–50% of the plant height;

branches initially erect, usually some eventually spreading or reflexed.

Spikelets

(3)4–7 mm;

florets 2–3(4);

rachilla internodes mostly exceeding 1 mm; 2nd internodes exceeding (1)1.2 mm; smooth or sparsely scabrous, glabrous.

Glumes

unequal, distinctly shorter than the adjacent lemmas;

keels smooth or sparsely scabrous;

lower glumes 1–3-veined, 50–67% as long as the lowest lemma.

Calluses

with sparse cobwebby hairs on at least some florets.

Lemmas

lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 2.5–4 mm long; smooth or scabrous throughout, glabrous;

tips narrowly acute, usually purple near the tip.

Anthers

0.5–1(1.8)mm.

Discussion

Openings in montane conifer forests. 1500–2700 m. BR, BW, Sisk. CA, ID, NV, WA; east to UT. Native.

Poa bolanderi is a tall, often glaucous annual with long, smooth lemmas. Similar Poa howellii has hairy lemmas and usually grows at lower elevations.
