Habit Herbs to 150 cm. Herbs with vertical rhizomes.
Leaves

up to 50 cm long, 5–20 cm wide, with lateral veins of 2 different thicknesses.

basal; simple, bases hastate to sagittate, pinnately veined;

petioles equal to or longer than the blades.

Inflorescences

spathes uniformly green or green with white or yellow-green margins;

spadices 50% to almost as long as spathes.

spadices shorter than the subtending spathes, staminate flowers distal, pistillate flowers proximal.

Flowers

unisexual;

tepals absent;

stamens 4–5, connate;

pistil 1.

Fruits

green to purple-green berries.

1–2(4) seeded berries, not embedded in spadices. North America. 2 species, 1 in Oregon.

Discussion

Freshwater and low salinity wetlands. Flowering Apr–Sep. 0–50 m. CR. CA, WA; eastern North America. Exotic.

This species is native to eastern North America and was likely introduced to Oregon as an ornamental.
