Canadian wild lettuce

glabrous to prickly-bristly.

Leaves

oblanceolate to elliptic-oblong or obovate, 5–30 × 1–10 cm; much reduced distally;

margins entire to denticulate or pinnately few-lobed, bases basally broadened and clasping stems;

margins denticulate, usually prickly;

surfaces glabrous or midribs with stout prickles below;

lobes broad, often somewhat curved toward base, sessile.

Inflorescences

10–30+ heads in panicle- or rarely raceme-like arrays;

peduncles short to long, sometimes bracteolate.

Involucres

9–12 mm.

Florets

12–20+;

ligules 6–12 mm, yellow, drying bluish.

Phyllaries

inner lance-linear;

surfaces glabrous; outer deltate to lance-linear, gradually or abruptly shorter.

Fruits

bodies broadly elliptic, 2.5–4 mm; grayish to tan; each face 5–9-veined, sometimes slightly winged distally; smooth except minutely bristled near bases;

beaks slender, 2.5–4 mm;

pappus bristles deciduous, white.

Discussion

Grasslands, open hillsides, roadsides, disturbed areas. Flowering Jul–Sep. 0–1800 m. BR, BW, Casc, CR, ECas, Lava, Owy, Sisk, WV. CA, ID, NV, WA; worldwide. Exotic.

Lactuca serriola is the most common exotic wild lettuce in Oregon. In some older references it is referred to as L. scariola, an invalid spelling variation.
