North America. 8–9 varieties; 2 varieties treated in Flora.

Woodlands, grasslands, riverbanks, dry slopes, sandbars, roadsides. Flowering Jun–Aug. 0–1400 m. Col, ECas, Lava, Sisk, WV. ID, WA; north to British Columbia, east to IL, MI, NE, adjacent Canada. Native.
