Discussion

Dry habitats or wet seeps, especially on serpentine soils, near bogs or meadows. Flowering Apr–Jul. 100–2200 m. Sisk. CA. Native.

Plants on serpentine soils (Hastingsia serpentinicola) are sometimes segregated from H. alba based on habitat and morphological differences. (Becking 1989). However, the characters used to separate these two taxa are highly variable and cannot be used consistently to separate specimens.

2 varieties.

Hastingsia bracteosa is almost always associated with Darlingtonia. While the two varieties of H. bracteosa were previously elevated to species level (Becking 1986), neither recent molecular investigations (Halpin and Fishbein 2013) nor current morphological studies support this. The two varieties can be found sympatrically in fens in the Illinois River valley and are thought to hybridize (Lang and Zika 1997).
