opposite;

surfaces woolly-pubescent, or adaxially glabrate and green, sessile or petiolate.

upper mostly alternate;

margins plane, rarely slightly revolute.

Discussion

10 varieties; 6 varieties treated in Flora.

Coniferous forests, juniper woodlands, sagebrush scrub, grasslands, subalpine slopes, roadsides. Flowering May–Aug. 50–2800 m. BR, BW, Casc, Col, ECas, Lava, Owy, Sisk. CA, ID, NV, WA; northeast to MT, east to WY, southeast to UT. Native.

This variety intergrades with variety lanatum.
