Habit Plants cespitose, (1.8)10–60 cm tall.
Leaves

(0.75)1–4 mm wide; flat.

Inflorescences

sheath of lowest bract well developed; lower spikes usually nodding or drooping;

lateral spikes female, with 6–20 perigynia; terminal spike male (rarely gynaecandrous), 4–10 mm long.

Perigynia

oblong-ovate, 2.3–3.5 × 0.8–1.2 mm, light green, gray; straw-colored, or brown; veinless but with 2 marginal ribs;

margins smooth or minutely roughened;

beak 0.5–1 mm long; indistinct, sometimes minutely roughened;

stigmas 3.

Achenes

trigonous.

Female scales

shorter but wider than the perigynia; light to medium brown at least at the base, obtuse to acute or acuminate, falling early; mid-stripe paler gold to brown or greenish; smooth or slightly scabrous.

Discussion

Moss mats in moist areas; bogs, marshes, stream banks, wet meadows, moist woods, usually on limestone substrates. 1600–2800 m. BW. CA, ID, NV, WA; north to AK, east to Greenland and ME, southeast to NM; Eurasia. Native.

Carex capillaris is a delicate sedge with dangling spikes, similar only to C. tiogana, a smaller, alpine species found on Steens Mountain.
