Stems

10–40 cm long, often branched.

Leaves

basal leaves 10–30 × 2–3 cm wide;

cauline leaves generally 2.

Inflorescences

1–6-flowered;

bracts 2–4; lance-linear; to 4 cm long.

Flowers

not fully opening;

sepals 25–30 mm long;

petals ovate; to 30 mm long, pink;

inner surface markedly lighter in color than outer surface (edges often same color as outer surface);

inner surface base sometimes with a dark red chevron or spots and a yellow band with some penciling;

inner surface hairs white above and yellow near base;

nectary lunate, deeply sunken, crested with branching hairs;

filaments to 14 mm long;

anthers obtuse; to 12 mm long.

Fruits

erect; to 25 × 15 mm, with a short beak.
