Powell's saltweed

Habit Herbs monoecious, rarely dioecious, 0.5–1.6(3) dm, gray-farinose.
Stems

erect, branched; reddish with age.

Leaves

alternate throughout;

blades rhombic-ovate to ovate, 5–30 × 1.5–5.5 mm, bases cuneate to cordate;

margins entire;

tips obtuse to acute, gray-farinose on both or just lower surfaces;

petioles becoming short to subsessile distally, 2–20(25) mm.

Inflorescences

axillary clusters, staminate and pistillate flowers typically intermixed;

distal clusters occasionally staminate.

Staminate flowers

perianths 4- or 5-parted.

Pistillate flowers

perianths absent;

bracteoles 2.

Seeds

monomorphic, 1.5–2 mm, brown.

Fruiting bracteoles

fused to tips; oval to obovate; (1.5)2.5–5 mm; lower ½–? with winged margins and faces thick-tuberculate; upper faces smooth;

tips with 1 tooth and 2 rounded lobes, sessile.

Discussion

Deserts, sagebrush communities. Flowering Apr–Oct. 900–1200 m. Owy. ID, NV; northeast to Alberta, east to NE, southeast to TX. Native.
